Multi-tenant architecture

Multi-tenant SaaS architecture: data isolation designed up front

We design how your customers' data is separated, routed and scaled, using row-level security, schema per tenant or a mix, chosen to fit your product and budget.

  • Row-level and schema isolation
  • Tenant routing by subdomain
  • Isolation tests in the build

What multi-tenancy is and why it matters

In a multi-tenant SaaS product, many customers (tenants) use the same application while each sees only their own data. Getting this wrong is one of the most serious mistakes a SaaS can make, because one customer may see another's records. It is also hard to fix after launch, since the tenancy model touches every table and every query.

That is why we settle the model during scoping, before the first screen is built. We can also review an existing product, as part of refactoring and scaling.

The isolation models we build

  • Shared database with row-level security: every table carries a tenant identifier, and PostgreSQL row-level security policies enforce it in the database itself. This is cost-efficient and suits most B2B products.
  • Schema per tenant: each customer gets its own schema in the same database. It separates data more strongly and suits customers with stricter data-handling requests, at the cost of heavier migrations.
  • Database per tenant: for a small number of large customers with strict requirements, at higher infrastructure cost.

Some products mix these, for example row-level security for most customers and a dedicated schema for one large account.

Beyond the database

Tenancy touches more than tables. We design tenant-aware handling for the rest of the product:

  • Subdomain routing such as tenant.yourdomain.com, with SSL through Cloudflare, and custom domains where needed.
  • Background jobs, caches, search indexes and file storage that stay tenant-scoped.
  • Per-tenant limits and rate controls, so one heavy customer does not slow the others.
  • Roles and permissions inside each tenant, with audit logs.
  • Billing tied to the tenant, with Stripe subscriptions and webhooks.

Connection pooling with PgBouncer is part of the plan once many tenants share one database.

Architecture work is usually part of a build, not a separate product. A production B2B platform with full multi-tenancy, team roles and integrations typically costs $18,000 to $35,000 and takes 8 to 12 weeks, paid by milestone. A design-only engagement or a review of an existing product is scoped on its own after we see the code. These are typical ranges, and a written quote follows scoping. See pricing.

Limits you should know about

No tenancy design makes a data leak impossible. Row-level security and tests lower the risk a lot, but application bugs, mistakes in configuration and human error still matter, so we write isolation tests and recommend review as the product grows. Data residency, contractual and regulatory requirements also depend on your hosting choices and agreements. We build software; we are not a certification body.

How it works

  1. Message us on WhatsApp or Telegram

Describe the product, the customers and the features that matter most.

  2. We scope and quote

You get the plan, the architecture outline and a written price range.

  3. We build and ship

Working builds each sprint, then a tested production launch.

Questions about saas dev agency in United States

Should I use row-level security or schema per tenant?

For most B2B products, a shared database with row-level security is the sensible starting point because it is simpler to run and cheaper to scale. Schema per tenant makes sense when customers demand stronger separation or when per-tenant customization is large. We recommend one after hearing your customer profile and budget.

Can you change the tenancy model of a live product?

Sometimes. Adding a tenant identifier to existing tables, enforcing it and backfilling data can be done step by step, but it is delicate work that needs a careful plan, backups and testing. We start with an audit of the code and database to see how large the job is.

How do you test that tenants cannot see each other's data?

We write automated tests that sign in as one tenant and try to read or change another tenant's records through every endpoint and background job. Those tests run in the CI pipeline on each change, so a regression is caught before release. Testing lowers risk but cannot prove the absence of every bug.

Does multi-tenancy affect cost?

Yes, in both directions. Sharing infrastructure lowers hosting cost per customer, while stricter isolation adds engineering and hosting cost. The right balance depends on who your customers are. We explain the tradeoffs in plain terms during scoping, with a rough view of what each option means for hosting and engineering effort over time.

Can customers get their own subdomain or domain?

Yes. We set up wildcard subdomains for each tenant and can add custom domains with automatic certificates. Custom domains involve DNS steps on the customer's side, so we build a clear setup screen and plain instructions into the product, which cuts down on support requests from your customers.
