Healthcare SaaS

HIPAA compliant SaaS development, with the requirements built in

We build healthcare software with HIPAA requirements in mind: access control, audit logs and encryption. Compliance also depends on your agreements, policies and operations.

What do we mean by HIPAA-minded SaaS development?

HIPAA is a US law that sets rules for how protected health information, or PHI, is stored, accessed and shared by covered entities and their business associates. We build with those rules in mind from the first design step, because adding controls to a finished product costs more than planning them.

That means we treat PHI as a category of data with its own handling: who can see it, where it is stored, what is logged and how long it is kept. We are a software team, not a certification body, and we do not claim to be certified.

Which technical safeguards do we build?

The safeguards we typically implement include:

  • Role-based access control, so staff see only the records their job needs
  • Strong sign-in with multi-factor authentication and session timeouts
  • Audit logs that record who viewed or changed a record, and when
  • Encryption in transit and at rest for data and backups
  • Careful separation of customer data in a multi-tenant design
  • Backups, retention rules and deletion workflows

We also keep PHI out of application logs, error reports and test data, which is a common source of accidental exposure.

How do hosting and business associate agreements fit in?

A business associate agreement, or BAA, is a contract with any vendor that handles PHI for you. Your cloud host, email service, error tracker, analytics tool and any AI provider each need to be checked. Some providers offer a BAA on certain plans only, and some do not offer one at all.

We design the system so PHI stays inside services that you have a BAA with, and we tell you which third-party tools to avoid on those screens. Signing the agreements and managing vendors is your responsibility, and we can explain the technical side of each choice.

Typical projects are patient portals, appointment scheduling, digital intake forms, practice management tools, care team messaging and reporting for clinics. Integration with other systems, for example through FHIR or HL7 interfaces, can be scoped when your project needs it.

Healthcare products are usually multi-tenant, so see our multi-tenant architecture work, and our custom SaaS development process for how a larger build runs.

What are the limits we should be clear about?

Software alone is never HIPAA compliant. Compliance also covers your written policies, staff training, risk assessments, vendor agreements and day-to-day operations. We build the technical controls, and your privacy officer or healthcare lawyer decides whether the whole setup meets your obligations.

We are not providing medical or legal advice, and we make no promise about audit outcomes. If your product serves patients outside the US, other laws, such as GDPR, may apply too. We sign an NDA on request.

Questions about saas dev agency in United States

Will you make our app HIPAA certified?

No. There is no official HIPAA certification for software, and we are not a certification body. We build with HIPAA requirements in mind and provide technical documentation of the controls. Your organization remains responsible for its policies, agreements and for confirming compliance with a qualified advisor.

Do you sign business associate agreements?

Whether we handle PHI at all depends on how the project is run. We prefer to build with test data and never touch real patient records. If your project needs a different arrangement, raise it early in scoping so it can be reviewed by your lawyer.

Can we use AI features with patient data?

Only if the AI provider will sign a BAA and the setup keeps PHI inside agreed boundaries. Otherwise, we can build AI features that work on de-identified or non-clinical data. We scope this case by case, and we do not promise that any model output is clinically accurate.

Which cloud hosts do you use for healthcare projects?

We deploy to hosts that offer a BAA for the services you need, such as the major cloud providers on suitable plans. You hold the cloud account. We check the specific services in use, because a BAA often covers some services and not others.

How much does a healthcare SaaS build cost?

It depends on scope and integrations. Typical ranges are $7,500 to $12,500 for a lean MVP sprint of about 4 weeks and $18,000 to $35,000 for a production B2B SaaS over 8 to 12 weeks. A written quote follows scoping. See pricing.
